Theodor Weimer tops CEO Image Ranking for the third time in a row

Strong financial results and successful strategies for preparing their companies for the future boost the image of the Dax30 CEOs.

  • Kasper Rorsted (adidas) climbs from third to second place. Johannes Teyssen (E.ON) rises from tenth to third place, buoyed by the upcoming Innogy takeover and his call for a CO2 tax
  • Oliver Zipse (BMW) newly enters the ranking on place four, Daimler CEO Ola Källenius enters  the top ten, up from rank 13

In the third quarter of 2019, Theodor Weimer (Deutsche Börse) again managed to defend his top position in UNICEPTA's Dax30 CEO Image Ranking. Strong business figures are driving his image: Despite a less favourable market environment, Weimer has confirmed the goal for 2019 to achieve "structural growth in net revenues of at least five percent and an increase in adjusted profit of ten percent," reports Börsen-Zeitung.

Strong business figures and a successful strategy are also driving the image of adidas CEO Kasper Rorsted: He comes in second behind Weimer in the lastest ranking. The Danish citizen has put simplified business processes and a focus on high-margin products on his agenda, as had been the case at Henkel. "Every country, every division and every brand must contribute to success in the future, Rorsted has demanded from his management team, thus putting it under pressure to succeed," Handelsblatt writes.

Johannes Teyssen (E.ON) made an enormous leap forward in the third quarter – from thenth to third rank. Media reports focus on the planned takeover of competitor Innogy. E.ON is supposed to become one of Europe's leading utilities, Handelsblatt describes his vision.  The top manager also reaffirmed to his shareholders E.ON's demand that “CO2 emissions must have a price that provides an incentive to avoid them”.

Zipse and Källenius join top 10

Oliver Zipse (BMW) and Ola Källenius (Daimler) have entered the top 10 of the Dax30 CEO Image Ranking for the first time. Zipse has been heading the Munich-based car maker since August. Media reports praise his clear and concise statements towards BMW employees. According to Süddeutsche Zeitung, he has "called on employees on his first day of work to accept the challenges and the opportunities the changes in the car industry offer". Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung describes him as a "strategist and analyst with strong leadership skills".

Ola Källenius, former head of Daimler's research division, newly enters the UNICEPTA image ranking, coming in tenths. The successor of Dieter Zetsche has appeased shareholders despite several earnings adjustments. He stressed the opportunities presented by new Chinese investor BAIC. Süddeutsche Zeitung quotes him as saying that the Chinese market is a "decisive pillar of our success" for sales as well as development and production.

For its CEO ranking, UNICEPTA analyzed around 27,260 articles published in German opinion-leading newspapers from January to September 2019 as well as articles from the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Economist. The ranking is based on the results of the UNICEPTA DAX Benchmark with which the provider of Smart Media & Data Intelligence continuously monitors the media presence of all Dax-listed companies, their CEOs, as well as the tonality of media coverage.
